The Institute of History “Nicolae Iorga” was founded on April 1, 1937 as the Institute for the Study of Universal History. The last, in chronological order, of the research institutions established by Nicolae Iorga, the Institute was led by him until November 1940. The current headquarters, built according to the plans of architect Petre Antonescu, with frescoes by Olga Greceanu, was inaugurated on December 16, 1939. In 1948, the Institute became the Institute of History of the R.P.R., under the aegis of the Romanian Academy. Since 1965 it is called the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History.

The four research programs currently existing and enrich Nicolae Iorga’s founding vision: to place Romanian history in the regional and continental context and to constitute a space of scientific sociability different from teachers, by organizing conferences on as diverse topics as possible.

The scientific mission of the Institute is to edit the fundamental sources of medieval, modern and contemporary history and, above all, to capitalize on these sources in individual or collective research works. The fundamental research themes are: the history of the Old Regime; the history of the Black Sea; the history of commerce and merchants; the accounts of foreign travelers from the medieval and modern periods; the problem of modernization of Romanian society in the 19th century; family history; history of minorities; history of the first world war; history of Romanian communism; history of historiography.

The Institute of History “Nicolae Iorga” is currently publishing the documentaries Documenta Romaniae Historica, B, Wallachia; Foreign travelers about the Romanian countries. Supplement; Foreign travelers about Romanian countries in the 19th century. New serie. Also, the “Nicolae Iorga” Institute of History coordinates the appearance of five specialized periodicals, most of them present in Romanian and foreign libraries, as well as online databases.
